Chapter 14

Dinner was a quick affair, as Char wanted to work on the old truck, and I had a project of my own.

While Char focused on the truck engine, with a running commentary from Norman, whether she wanted it or not, I headed to my own outbuilding, which I called my potting shed but was so much more. More than one friend had suggested I turn it into a money-making holiday let, but I’d taken it over for my witching. I’d put a cauldron on its woodstove, and made my creams and potions there, next to my drying herbs, my library, and other tools of my craft. When Blue saw me headed for my shed, holding a single rose I’d taken from Alistair’s arrangement, she immediately jumped off the window seat where she’d been napping and followed along.

She knew when she was needed, usually without me doing anything more than setting my intention.

We made our way through the garden, and how I wished I could afford Owen to keep it in as good shape as Lemmington House’s. I felt sadness seeping from the wilted blooms.

Maybe flowers couldn’t talk the way Norman did, but I’d always found they could communicate. I unlocked the door to my potting shed and stood in the dusky light, breathing in the comforting scents of drying herbs and beeswax. I cast my circle first, then lit the candles. Blue came into the circle with me, and I also brought the wilted rose. It was one of the yellow ones that always reminded me of him. It seemed more wilted than the rest, which was why I’d chosen it.

I’m not the psychic my mother is, but the blood of mediums does run in my veins, and I can catch shadows sometimes, though not in a reliable fashion. I had nothing but a sense of disquiet and flowers that had died before their time. Maybe a touch of magic would clarify my thoughts.

I lay the single rose in front of me. Blue settled herself beside me. I sat in the candle-lit circle, breathing slowly, then closed my eyes.

Spirits of the north, south, east, and west,

We call on you a truth to test,

Please show us what was witnessed by this bloom,

A death accidental or a good man who met his doom?

Help me the truth to see

As I will, so mote it be
